Sustainable cosmetic tubes: PCR & sugarcane
Sustainability has moved from a marketing claim to a purchasing requirement. Brands are switching to tubes made with post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic and sugarcane-based bioplastic, and those tubes fill and seal on the same equipment as conventional ones. We Fill Tubes fills both — this page covers how the materials differ, where the market is heading, and what to know before your first sustainable run.
Where the market is heading
Future Market Insights forecasts the sugarcane-based tube market growing from $266 million in 2026 to $455 million by 2036 (5.5% CAGR). EPL, the world's largest tube manufacturer, reports 43% of its tube sales are already sustainable formats, up from just 5% five years earlier.
The emerging format combines both materials: a sugarcane bio-PE sleeve with a PCR closure — because bio-based content alone does not satisfy recycled-content regulations.
PCR tubes: recycled content
PCR (post-consumer resin) tubes blend recycled polyethylene — typically 30–70% PCR content — into the tube body. They keep the look, squeeze, and barrier performance brands expect, cut virgin plastic use, and count toward recycled-content mandates.
One compliance note: from January 1, 2027, brands making recycled-content claims in California under SB 54 will need APR-certified PCR with a documented chain of custody — so certified PCR tube stock matters when sourcing.
Sugarcane tubes: renewable feedstock
Sugarcane tubes are made from bio-based polyethylene produced from sugarcane ethanol instead of fossil feedstocks. Bio-PE is chemically identical to conventional PE, so it behaves the same in filling and sealing, and it recycles in the same PE stream — the difference is where the carbon comes from: the sugarcane absorbs CO2 as it grows.
Bio-based content does not count as recycled content under packaging regulations, which is why many brands pair it with PCR components.
Filling sustainable tubes at We Fill Tubes
PCR and sugarcane tubes are drop-in materials — same diameters (16–50mm), same hot-air sealing for plastic and laminate tubes, same lot coding and pack-out as any other run. Your tube supplier ships the tubes directly to our Vernon, NJ facility; we fill, seal, code, and pack with no minimum order quantities and standard turnaround of about a week.
If you are switching an existing product to a sustainable tube, the change is in the tube stock, not in your filling process.
